What kind of editing do you need?
Figuring out what kind of editing your manuscript needs can be mystifying, especially if you’re a first-time author. It can be even more confusing because the same or similar levels of editing may be called different things by different individuals or editorial groups. Don’t worry though, all you really have to remember is that editing always goes from “big picture” to “fine details”, just like any other creative process.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you decide which type or types of editing you want to have done for your manuscript. You may choose one, or none. It’s entirely up to you. I will say, however, that it’s always a good idea to have a fresh set of (human) eyes on your manuscript at some point before publishing (no matter which publishing route you’re pursuing).
Here’s a little primer on the different types and levels of editing.
